Mississippi death of Black woman found hanging sparks racial trauma
The death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black woman found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi, has resurfaced historical traumas regarding lynching in the American South.
Jarques Ratliff, 51, has pleaded not guilty to murder in connection with the case. While police and prosecutors have not yet released a suspected motive, they indicated that further arrests may be expected. Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, stated she believes the death was personal and involves someone acquainted with her daughter, though she does not believe race was a factor.
The incident is part of a broader trend in the South, where approximately half a dozen Black individuals have been found hanged over the last two years. These cases have frequently led to skepticism from the community when investigators rule the deaths as suicides, given the region's history of racial violence and vigilante killings.
