Nolan Wells death case sent to Mississippi grand jury, autopsy withheld

Eighteen‑year‑old Nolan Wells, a Black college student, disappeared on July 4, 2026 during a boating trip to Horn Island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His body was recovered on July 6.

The family, represented by civil‑rights attorney Ben Crump, commissioned an independent autopsy that was unable to determine the cause or manner of death, noting unexplained discoloration on the back of his skull and missing neck structures. The state’s official autopsy has been completed but will remain sealed until a Jackson County grand jury reviews the case, as required by district attorney Angel Myers McIlrath, who said, “Every death in the county — except those of natural causes and non‑criminal car wrecks — is presented to your grand jury.”

The grand jury will decide whether there is sufficient evidence of foul play to bring charges. The investigation has drawn national attention and prompted civil‑rights leaders and lawmakers to call for greater transparency, highlighting broader concerns about the safety of Black Americans in predominantly white settings.
