Nolan Wells death prompts calls for independent autopsy and transparent investigation
Eighteen‑year‑old Nolan Xavier Wells vanished on July 4, 2026 while on a boat trip to Horn Island, Mississippi. His body was recovered in the water off the island’s north‑western tip on July 6‑7, and officials say the cause of death is still pending, with drowning currently suspected and no immediate evidence of foul play.
The family has retained civil‑rights attorney Ben Crump, who said, “We will not rest until every fact about what happened to Nolan on Horn Island is brought into the light.” Crump also noted “so many inconsistencies,” including deleted text messages found on Wells’s phone and conflicting accounts of whether Wells chose to stay on the island. An independent autopsy, funded in part by former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, is being arranged.
Mississippi Chancery Judge Ashlee Cole, whose son Warren was among the friends on the trip, posted on Facebook to “dispell rumors,” stating, “Our family, along with the community, grieves the loss of Nolan Wells.” She denied any influence on the investigation and explained her temporary deactivation of social media for privacy reasons.
The search involved multiple agencies, including the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Coast Guard, Gulf Islands National Seashore, and the volunteer United Cajun Navy. Wells’s friends have cooperated with investigators, but the family continues to request any videos, photos, or witness statements from Horn Island to clarify the events leading up to his death.
