Mississippi Teen Nolan Wells' Death Investigation Continues Amid Autopsy Completion and Civil Suit Preparations

Mississippi officials have completed the state autopsy of 18‑year‑old Nolan Wells, but the report has not been released and will be submitted to a grand jury for review. A private autopsy commissioned by the family was also completed and concluded the cause and manner of death remain undetermined. Wells’ body was recovered on July 6, 2026, on a barrier island off the Gulf Coast after he vanished during a July 4 boating trip to Horn Island.

Family attorney Gary Bufkin sent a ten‑page preservation notice on July 20, the day of Wells’ funeral, warning that litigation is reasonably anticipated and subpoenaing major social‑media platforms to retain relevant data. The family is preparing a civil lawsuit, and a $175,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest.

Civil‑rights lawyer Ben Crump is leading an independent investigation and has hired audio‑engineering experts to review a July 4 distress call to Sea Tow that described a bilge‑pump failure and noted about seven people on board. Officials say witnesses reported Wells was not on the boat when it left the island. Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath reiterated that the state autopsy report will be released only after the grand‑jury process. The investigation remains ongoing with no criminal charges announced.
