Nolan Wells' Family Demands Thorough Investigation After Mississippi Teen's Death
Eighteen‑year‑old Nolan Wells, a Black student‑athlete, vanished on July 4 2026 while on a Fourth of July boating trip to Horn Island off the Mississippi coast with three white friends. His body was recovered on the morning of July 6, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has said drowning is the most likely cause, though no foul play has been ruled out.
Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, have rejected the official explanation. They allege inconsistencies in friends’ statements, note that Nolan’s phone was returned with its Snapchat accounts wiped clean, and claim that messages appear to have been deleted. The family has retained civil‑rights lawyer Ben Crump, arranged an independent autopsy in Washington, D.C., and received support from Rev. Al Sharpton and former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, who helped fund the autopsy.
At press conferences in New York and on Good Morning America, the Wonsleys demanded “honesty, transparency and a thorough investigation.” They have urged anyone with eyewitness video or photos from Horn Island on July 4 to come forward. The investigation remains ongoing, with officials asking the public for information.
