Mistral unveils Mistral Large 4 open-weight AI model

French AI laboratory Mistral has announced the release of Mistral Large 4, an ambitious open-weight model nicknamed ‘Le Chonk’. Featuring 1,000 billion parameters, the model is positioned as one of the most powerful developments outside of China. Currently available in preview, the full version is expected by the end of the month.

Unlike proprietary models from companies such as OpenAI or Google, this open-weight model allows users to download, inspect, and deploy it on private servers. Mistral has optimized the model for specific vertical sectors, including software development, cyber defense, finance, electrical engineering, and manufacturing.

The company’s rapid ascent highlights broader discussions regarding European digital sovereignty and the competition between French and German strategic interests. Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer Guillaume Lample noted the necessity of maintaining pace amidst intense competition from the United States and China.
