MIT study finds AI overreliance harms fake‑news detection

A four‑week study conducted by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology tracked 67 participants as they evaluated news headlines and images with and without the assistance of AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Claude. The AI tools increased the correct identification of false content by about 21 % when participants relied on them. However, when the same participants later judged new items without AI help, their performance dropped by roughly 15 % compared with their initial baseline, indicating that heavy dependence on AI can erode independent critical‑thinking skills.

The researchers concluded that while generative AI can provide short‑term benefits in spotting misinformation, excessive reliance may weaken long‑term abilities to detect fake news and other deceptive media.
