AI adoption, data‑center power, and misinformation
Overview
Since the wave of AI‑generated deepfakes in spring 2026, concerns over consent, image rights and political manipulation have grown. Chinese regulators removed thousands of altered clips in June and YouTube gave priority to human‑face content. Meanwhile the United States and Europe faced rising data‑centre power needs as AI workloads expanded; Ford re‑tooled its Kentucky EV‑battery plant to make 5.45 MWh containerised storage units for operators such as EDF Power Solutions. A Malwarebytes survey of 1,500 respondents in Europe and the United States found 88 % now struggle to distinguish genuine from AI‑generated media, up from 66 % a year earlier, and reported a surge in personalized AI‑crafted phishing. The European Commission introduced a voluntary Code of Practice for labeling AI‑created media ahead of mandatory AI‑Act transparency rules. Legal scholars and university deans called for responsible journalism and output‑transparency safeguards. In July, Apple moved to dismiss a class‑action lawsuit alleging it scraped public YouTube videos to train its models, invoking DMCA provisions. Analysts warned that large‑language‑model‑driven robotics still lack an internet‑scale source of physical‑world data, a gap that could stall U.S. manufacturing reshoring. A Munich regional court held Google liable for false statements generated by its AI Overviews feature, highlighting concerns over AI‑assistant misinformation.
A March 2026 EU report named X (formerly Twitter) as the source of 88 % of analysed disinformation, leading to a UK ban on its use by the Justice Department and an EU probe of X’s AI chatbot Grok. In July, France’s Senate commission proposed algorithm‑transparency rules, influencer regulation and an independent disinformation observatory, while French journalists announced a return to X. The Meta Oversight Board’s July study showed large‑language‑models refused 34 % of requests for politically sensitive content about restrictive regimes, warning of “censorship by proxy” and urging human‑rights audits of AI systems.
