MIT Study Finds Chatbot Overreliance Erodes Critical Thinking
A study by the Technology Institute at MIT in Massachusetts reports that excessive reliance on chat‑bots diminishes users' critical‑thinking abilities and hampers their capacity to recognize misinformation.
While AI tools can aid in spotting false content, the research shows they may also impair judgment when users depend on them for verification. Participants often accepted AI suggestions because they sounded well‑informed, and about a quarter believed their detection skills had improved even as their actual performance declined.
“When we communicate with AI, we feel we become better at certain tasks but many studies show that this is not the case,” said Anku Rani, an MIT doctoral student and co‑author of the study. The authors warn educators to design AI‑assisted learning that builds analytical skills rather than creating cognitive dependence.
