Mitchell's Causeway repair in NSW pushes Great Western Highway reopening to 2027

Transport for NSW has deployed a 76‑tonne piling rig to the damaged Mitchell's Causeway near Mount Victoria, beginning work on a new bridge deck supported by deep‑set piles. Over 120 workers are on site, with up to 40 operating each day, and the project is slated for completion in the second quarter of 2027.

The Great Western Highway, the main link between Sydney and the Central West, was closed in early March after structural failures were found at Victoria Pass. The closure has forced traffic onto the Darling Causeway and Chifley Road, adding travel time and safety concerns, and has severely impacted regional businesses and tourism. The NSW Government announced a $20 million support package for affected businesses, which local representatives have called inadequate. Local operators such as Hartley Valley Holiday Farm report loss of members, staff turnover, and an extra 50‑minute round‑trip due to the detour.
