Mitchell's Causeway repair in NSW
Overview
In early August 2026, Transport for NSW began a major reconstruction of the damaged Mitchell's Causeway near Mount Victoria, deploying a 76-tonne piling rig and mobilising over 120 workers. The work involves removing the existing road surface, installing new bridge foundations and deep-set support piles, with completion targeted for the second quarter of 2027. The closure of the Great Western Highway, the main Sydney-to-Central West link, forces traffic onto alternate routes, adding 50-plus minutes to trips and hurting regional businesses and tourism.
While the NSW Government initially announced a $20 million support package for affected enterprises, local operators and Federal MP Andrew Gee described the amount as inadequate.
By mid-August, the Australian Federal Government committed $100 million to the project, matching a $100 million commitment from the New South Wales Government. This total $200 million funding package is intended to reconstruct Victoria Pass and Mitchell’s Causeway, which were closed in March 2026 due to structural cracking and geotechnical issues. The upgrades, currently being undertaken by Seymour Whyte, will include a new elevated concrete road deck and a permanent third eastbound climbing lane to address freight bottlenecks. The Livestock, Bulk and Rural Carriers Association (LBRCA) has welcomed the investment, noting the highway's national significance as a freight artery for agricultural goods and essential supplies.
However, some regional critics have argued the project serves as a “temporary fix,” suggesting that more transformational infrastructure, such as a bypass tunnel, is required to address long-term safety and congestion concerns.
