Indonesia’s Auto Industry Focuses on GIIAS 2026, New Models and Toyota Relocation Incentives

The Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026 became a focal point for Indonesia’s automotive sector. At the show, PT Hino Motors Sales Indonesia presented the Hino Bodymaker Award 2026, recognizing several body‑builder partners for meeting the company’s standards. Mitsubishi Motors highlighted the New Xforce HEV, which a national racer demonstrated could travel over 1,000 km on a single tank with fuel consumption around 27.9 km/L. BYD showcased its M6 DM plug‑in hybrid, capable of up to 150 km on electric‑only mode, while Honda launched the Super‑One electric car priced at Rp 438 million and limited to 100 units.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa announced that the government would offer incentives to Toyota if the Japanese automaker moves its main production from Thailand to Indonesia, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s position as a regional auto hub. Toyota’s Indonesian subsidiary responded, noting technical feasibility but emphasizing the need to consider the existing supply‑chain ecosystem.

The Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2026 was also prepared, with ITDC and West Nusa Tenggara police coordinating security and logistics for the October 9‑11 event, targeting more than 145,000 spectators. Consumer sentiment was explored by economist Josua Pardede, who warned that aggressive price competition could undermine industry sustainability, while a survey showed that reliability, range and charging infrastructure remain the top concerns for electric‑vehicle buyers.

Overall, GIIAS 2026 highlighted a surge of new models across hybrid, plug‑in hybrid, battery‑electric and conventional segments, underscoring Indonesia’s ambition to become Southeast Asia’s largest automotive manufacturing hub.
