Mitsubishi Motors to invest $473 million in Thailand for hybrid Triton and Pajero production
Mitsubishi Motors announced a 16 billion‑baht (about US$473 million) investment in Thailand through 2030 to convert its existing plants into a hub for electric‑drive vehicles. The plan, unveiled by CEO Takao Kato in a meeting with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on 24 July, targets hybrid versions of the Triton pickup and the next‑generation Pajero SUV, with local assembly expected to begin later this year.
Thailand already serves as a major production and export centre for Mitsubishi, where the company has invested more than ¥500 billion and ships over 5 million vehicles worldwide. Current Thai output includes the Xforce and Xpander models equipped with self‑charging hybrid (HEV) systems. The new hybrid powertrains will likely pair the existing 2.4‑litre diesel engine with electric assistance, while fully electric or plug‑in hybrid variants would require substantial chassis redesigns.
Mitsubishi has not yet set a launch date for pure‑electric versions of the Triton or Pajero, but the investment underscores its short‑term strategy to expand hybrid offerings before moving toward full electrification.
