MIVA church drives ambulance boat fundraiser for Tanzania's Victoria Sea islands

The MIVA foundation is organising a nationwide church collection in the Netherlands on 15‑16 August to raise money for an ambulance boat that will serve remote islands in the Victoria Sea, Tanzania. The boat is intended to transport pregnant women, sick children and other vulnerable patients more quickly to health posts or mainland hospitals, a need highlighted by Dr Athuman, who works at a health post on the islands. He recounts the death of 24‑year‑old Damali, whose unborn child also died after a costly, delayed boat crossing. MIVA says that a single ambulance boat could enable timely care for thousands of island residents, preventing avoidable fatalities caused by the current reliance on expensive, overcrowded private vessels.

The fundraising effort seeks donations from Dutch supporters, with the goal of purchasing the boat and improving emergency medical access for the island communities of Tanzania's Victoria Sea.
