MLB Network to premiere documentary on baseball's role after 9/11

MLB Network has announced the premiere of ‘When America Took the Field’, a two-hour documentary examining the role of baseball in the United States' recovery following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The film is scheduled to air on September 10 at 10 p.m. ET, with re-airings over the following three nights and streaming availability on MLB.TV starting the week of September 13.

The documentary features interviews with numerous Hall of Famers, including Joe Torre, Ken Griffey Jr., Chipper Jones, John Smoltz, Craig Biggio, and Mike Piazza. It also includes perspectives from former players such as Roger Clemens and Bernie Williams, as well as prominent broadcasters like Bob Costas and Joe Buck.

Key historical moments highlighted in the film include the September 21, 2001, game between the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves at Shea Stadium, the address by Jack Buck at Busch Stadium, and President George W. Bush’s ceremonial first pitch at Yankee Stadium during the 2001 World Series. While previous specials focused narrowly on New York, this production aims to explore how baseball impacted clubhouses and communities across the entire country during that period.
