MLB September 11 anniversary commemorations

Overview

Major League Baseball (MLB) has organized various tributes and media projects to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

In preparation for the anniversary, MLB Network announced the premiere of ‘When America Took the Field’, a two-hour documentary examining the role of baseball in the United States' recovery following the attacks. Commemorative efforts included league-wide moments of silence and special ‘We Shall Never Forget’ patches on player caps, with the Mets and Yankees wearing first responder themed caps. Additionally, the Mets and MLB partnered with the nonprofit 9/11 Day for a community service event at Citi Field to package meals for families in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

On September 11, 2026, the commemorations culminated in a Subway Series matchup between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets at Yankee Stadium. The pregame ceremony included a wreath-laying in Monument Park involving current players and 2001 Yankees alumni, such as Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. Honor guards from the NYPD, FDNY, and Port Authority Police Department were recognized, and a large American flag was unfurled in the outfield. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Brielle Saracini, daughter of United Flight 175 pilot Victor Saracini, and Sean McGuire, both of whom lost parents in the 2001 attacks.

A brief delay occurred during the game when a fan was detained by security after running onto the field waving a Palestinian flag. The Yankees ultimately defeated the Mets 6-4, with Cody Bellinger providing key offensive support via a three-run home run and Carlos Rodón earning the win.
