MLB reprimands umpire following controversy during Hancel Rincón debut

Major League Baseball (MLB) has addressed an incident involving umpire Doug Eddings during the debut of Dominican reliever Hancel Rincón with the St. Louis Cardinals. The league determined that Eddings acted inappropriately and excessively when he ordered Rincón to adjust his cap, an action that did not violate any specific rules.

The confrontation escalated during a game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. After Eddings instructed the catcher to tell Rincón to straighten his cap, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol intervened in defense of the rookie. This led to Marmol’s ejection from the game.

On the field, Rincón’s debut was difficult; the 24-year-old pitcher allowed three earned runs and three hits in one-third of an inning. Despite the challenging performance and the officiating controversy, Rincón becomes the 121st player from Pedernales, Dominican Republic, to debut in the Major Leagues.
