Germany: Arms dealers sentenced and police officers dismissed

In two separate legal developments in Germany, courts have issued significant rulings regarding weapons trafficking and police misconduct.

The Wuppertal District Court sentenced two arms dealers to two and a half and three and a half years in prison for trading in war weapons. The defendants confessed to purchasing machine pistols and ammunition from a primary suspect. This case stems from the discovery of a massive weapons cache in Remscheid, where investigators found over 300 firearms hidden behind secret doors and false walls in a private museum-like setting. The trial against the primary suspect, a 60-year-old master mechanic, is ongoing.

Separately, the Administrative Court of Münster has removed two police officers from their civil service positions following a 2020 incident in Gevelsberg. The officers were found to have abandoned their colleagues during a shootout in which a driver fired 21 shots at officers. Instead of providing assistance or warning shots, the officers fled the scene in a passing vehicle. This decision represents the most severe disciplinary measure available for their failure to act during the life-threatening event.
