Morocco reaches historic 54th rank in Global Innovation Index

Morocco has achieved its highest-ever ranking in the 2026 Global Innovation Index (GII), climbing to 54th place among 139 economies. This represents a significant upward trajectory from its 75th position in 2020.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the country ranks 4th among lower-middle-income economies and 7th in the North Africa and West Asia region. The improvement is driven by industrial upgrading and the increased valuation of intangible assets. Morocco holds notable global positions in specific categories, including 5th in industrial design registrations, 8th in the density of intangible asset use, and 16th in trademarks.

The report highlights a structural shift toward technology-driven sectors and high-tech manufacturing, where Morocco ranks 28th. While the country is recognized as an “Innovation Overperformer” for its ability to convert investments into results—ranking 46th in innovation outputs despite being 76th in innovation inputs—WIPO notes that reaching the top 40 will require addressing challenges such as limited private sector R&D investment and startup financing.
