Morocco’s Growth – AI, EV‑Battery, Agriculture, Trade
Overview
Morocco’s economy continued its strong 2026 performance, with the Bank of Morocco reporting an 18 % rise in official foreign‑exchange reserves to 442.9 bn dirhams – enough to cover roughly five months of imports and meeting IMF adequacy standards. The bank’s outlook kept the 2026 GDP growth projection at 4.8 %, driven by public investment, a robust agricultural rebound and gains in construction, tourism and services.
Unemployment stayed high at 13 % overall and 37 % among youth, while 78.3 % of households said living standards had deteriorated, underscoring the gap between macro‑level indicators and household experience. Business formation surged, with 42,905 new firms registered in the first five months of 2026; commerce (27.6 %), construction/public works/real estate (25.2 %) and services (19.6 %) were the dominant sectors, and Casablanca‑Settat accounted for 39.3 % of registrations.
The World Bank’s deputy head for the region projected a medium‑term real GDP increase of about 4.3 %, noting an 11.2 % rise in investment spending for 2026. Growth is supported by expanding private consumption, low inflation and resilience in agriculture, tourism and mineral exports, though structural challenges such as water scarcity, climate change, labour‑market fragility and higher energy import costs remain.
A separate analysis warned that the 2026 expansion relies heavily on an exceptional agricultural surge and may slow to around 3 % in 2027 as that boost fades. In parallel, Morocco deepened economic cooperation with Mali at a joint committee meeting in Bamako, outlining joint projects in agriculture, infrastructure, energy, mining, education, tourism and modern technologies as part of a broader South‑South partnership.
