Santo Domingo mobility study reveals 6.7 million daily trips
The National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (INTRANT) released a mobility study for Greater Santo Domingo, revealing that 6.7 million trips occur daily in the metropolitan area. The study, supported by the French Development Agency and the European Union, shows that 31.7% of trips are destined for the National District. A significant shift in transportation modes was noted: the use of public cars (conchos) dropped from 14% in 2018 to 8% in the 2025-2026 period, while private motorcycles (10%), motoconchos (7.7%), and ride-sharing services like Uber (7.4%) saw increased usage. Mass transit, including the Metro, now accounts for 37.4% of trips.
In response to traffic challenges, transport leaders and officials are proposing various measures. Mochotran has requested the government accelerate the expansion of exclusive bus corridors and feeder routes. Meanwhile, INTRANT Director Juan Manuel Méndez stated that while traffic issues cannot be solved immediately, they can be managed through progressive strategies and stronger institutional regulation.
Infrastructure projects are also underway, including the relaunch of the La Nueva Barquita corridor with modernized buses and the study of a new Metro Line 4 to connect Santo Domingo with San Cristóbal. Additionally, construction is set to begin on a new cable car system in Puerto Plata to enhance tourism mobility.
