Mochovce nuclear power plant fourth block connects to Slovak grid
The fourth block of the Mochovce nuclear power plant has successfully connected to the Slovak electricity grid. The synchronization, which occurred at 20:41 on Thursday, took place while the reactor was operating at 20 percent power. This milestone marks the first time the fourth block has supplied electricity to the national system, specifically through the connection of the first of its two turbogenerators.
The project has faced significant delays and cost increases. The construction of the third and fourth blocks has risen from an original estimate of 2.7 billion euros to 6.7 billion euros, and the completion has been delayed by more than a decade.
Once fully operational, the block will have an installed capacity of 471 megawatts and is expected to produce approximately 3.5 million megawatt-hours of electricity annually, accounting for roughly 13 percent of Slovakia's current energy consumption. The initial connection was delayed from Tuesday due to technical complications involving unusual feedback in voltage measurement circuits, which required additional safety testing.
