Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant expansion and grid connection
Overview
The Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant in Slovakia has reached a significant milestone with the connection of its fourth block to the national electricity grid.
Initially, the operator, Slovenské elektrárne, announced it would repeat technical tests for the fourth block generator after detecting “non-standard responses in the voltage measurement circuits” during primary testing. These issues were located within the non-nuclear section of the plant. Following these additional safety tests, the fourth block successfully synchronized with the Slovak grid at 20:41 on a Thursday while the reactor was operating at 20 percent power. This connection involved the first of the block’s two turbogenerators.
The project has been characterized by significant delays and cost increases, with total construction costs for the third and fourth blocks rising from an original estimate of 2.7 billion euros to 6.7 billion euros. Once fully operational, the block will have an installed capacity of 471 megawatts and is expected to produce approximately 3.5 million megawatt-hours of electricity annually, accounting for roughly 13 percent of Slovakia’s current energy consumption.
Following the connection on October 15, officials stated that the development has brought Slovakia to a state of energy self-sufficiency in electricity production. Prime Minister Robert Fico indicated that the country is positioned to become an energy exporter by 2027, with the potential to export 400 to 500 megawatts to international markets. Minister of Economy Denisa Saková noted that Slovakia possesses one of the cleanest energy mixes globally, with approximately 85 percent of its energy derived from decarbonized sources. The government is currently seeking recognition from the European Union to utilize cohesion policy resources to support energy prices for domestic industry and households.
