Modena serial killer investigation set to reopen using DNA analysis
Authorities in Modena are preparing to reopen investigations into a series of murders attributed to an unidentified serial killer. The crimes, which occurred between 1985 and 1995, involved at least eight women, many of whom were sex workers or had substance abuse issues.
Lawyer Barbara Iannuccelli, representing the families of five victims, has filed formal requests to utilize modern forensic techniques. The investigation aims to conduct DNA analysis on biological evidence and objects recovered from the crime scenes that were preserved at the Institute of Legal Medicine. Specific items of interest include hairs found in the hand of victim Claudia Santachiara and a stone linked to the death of Annamaria Palermo.
The Carabinieri and State Police are currently reviewing case files and coordinating with the Prosecutor's Office to determine which samples will undergo scientific testing. While previous attempts to identify a suspect were unsuccessful, investigators hope that contemporary genetic profiling will provide new leads in the decades-old case.
