Modena cold case murder investigations
Overview
Authorities in Modena are revisiting a series of unsolved murders that occurred between 1985 and 1995. The victims, at least eight women often described as sex workers or individuals struggling with drug addiction, died from various causes including strangulation, stabbing, and blunt force trauma.
While media previously referred to the perpetrator as the ‘Modena monster,’ legal and forensic experts have historically questioned whether the deaths were linked to a single serial killer. Following formal requests from attorney Barbara Iannuccelli, who represents the families of several victims, the prosecution has directed investigators to review old case files.
Efforts are currently underway to determine if physical evidence preserved at the Institute of Legal Medicine is suitable for modern forensic re-examination. Investigators aim to use contemporary DNA analysis and genetic profiling on biological evidence, such as hairs and other objects recovered from crime scenes, to determine if the cases are connected.
