Modern Greek opera “Lyksistrate” opens at Athens’ Lykaftos Municipal Theatre

A new operatic adaptation of Aristophanes’ Lyksistrate, staged by director‑composer Stamatios Krauνακης, begins performances at the Lykaftos Municipal Theatre in Athens on 15 July at 21:00. The production, supported by the mayor of Athens, features a cast of thirty singers and musicians, a contemporary orchestration, and set‑design by internationally recognised scenographer Takis.

The show blends satire with modern musical styles, presenting the ancient heroine’s “strike of love” against male power structures. It follows a two‑day run at the historic Herodion and is promoted as a comedic yet politically resonant opera for today’s audience.
