Modrac Lake's untapped tourism potential and Croatia's premier dive sites spotlight Balkan water recreation

Modrac Lake, the largest reservoir in Bosnia and Herzegovina's Tuzla Canton, is recognised for its rich fish stocks and recreational use but remains underdeveloped for tourism. Local experts, entrepreneurs such as hotel owner Enes Memić, and anglers note that un‑paved shores, pollution and a lack of facilities limit its appeal, while recent works in 2024 have opened a new promenade along the right bank, creating opportunities for biking and leisure.

In neighboring Croatia, a series of underwater attractions are being promoted, including the historic Baron Gautsch wreck off Rovinj, the limestone ridge Bijelac near Lastovo, and the Taranto wreck close to Dubrovnik. These sites, protected by the Ministry of Culture, draw divers with abundant marine life, coral formations and ship‑wreck exploration, highlighting the Adriatic coast's growing reputation as a prime diving destination.
