Balkan water tourism development

In mid‑July, a travel feature highlighted two lake destinations: Rapperswil‑Jona on Lake Zurich in Switzerland, praised for its medieval town, castle and easy train or boat access, and Šoderica Lake in northern Croatia, noted for its turquoise water, swimming, fishing and historic leisure use.

Two weeks later, attention turned to another regional water site, Modrac Lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where local entrepreneurs and anglers described abundant fish but limited tourism infrastructure, while a newly built promenade promised biking and leisure opportunities. The same report also promoted several Croatian dive attractions—such as the Baron Gautsch wreck, the Bijelac limestone ridge and the Taranto wreck—underscoring the Adriatic coast’s growing reputation as a diving destination.

Together the snapshots show a broader push to develop and market lake and underwater attractions across the Balkans, moving from established scenic day‑trips to efforts to upgrade under‑used reservoirs and promote specialized dive tourism.
