Mogi Guaçu and Mario Campos in Minas Gerais launch new mosquito control programs
The health secretariat of Mogi Guaçu will install 40 ovitrampas on 12 June to monitor the Aedes aegypti mosquito that spreads dengue, chikungunya and Zika. The traps – black pots with yeast and a wooden strip – will be placed at several basic health units and in the southern zone, collected after five days and sent for laboratory analysis. Officials say the data will pinpoint early mosquito breeding sites, allowing targeted vector‑control actions. The municipality stresses that the traps are safe and urges residents not to move them.
In Mario Campos, the state government began releasing Wolbachia‑infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes on 10 June as part of the Paraopeba Project. The Wolbachia bacterium blocks dengue, Zika and chikungunya viruses within the mosquito, reducing transmission. Releases will occur over roughly 20 weeks, following production at a bio‑factory built with more than R$77 million in investment. Local health and municipal leaders cite the method as a safe, non‑genetically‑modified tool to protect public health.
