Mohan Bhagwat’s US and Canada tour sparks controversy
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s recent tour of the United States and Canada has drawn significant attention and controversy. During events in New York and Toronto, Bhagwat emphasized themes of ‘unity in diversity’ and the principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family). He asserted that India has served the world as a ‘Vishwaguru’ (world teacher) through its civilizational values rather than seeking to be a ‘Mahashakti’ (superpower). Bhagwat also stated that a Hindu who believes there should be no Muslims in India is not a true Hindu, defining dharma as a universal principle rather than a specific religion.
The outreach efforts faced intense opposition. In New York, protesters gathered outside Madison Square Garden, with groups like the Indian American Muslim Council demanding the revocation of Bhagwat’s visa and sanctions against the RSS. The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has urged the US government to consider such sanctions and visa revocations, citing concerns over religious freedom in India.
Political leaders in the US have also reacted, with some pledging to reject donations from Hindu nationalist organizations. While supporters and various Hindu-American organizations welcomed the events as a celebration of oneness, critics accused the RSS of attempting to whitewash its record regarding religious minorities in India.
