RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat international outreach
Overview
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is scheduled to embark on an international tour starting August 25, visiting the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This travel is part of the ‘Sampark Abhiyan’, a global outreach campaign marking the organization’s centenary year, intended to engage the Indian diaspora and various international institutions. In the United States, Bhagwat is slated to speak at the ‘Universal Oneness Celebration’ in Manhattan on August 29. Organized by the ‘American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue’ (AHEAD Forum), the event aims to promote ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’—meaning ‘the world is one family’. However, a report by the anti-supremacy platform Savera, titled ‘Fibs, Fronts & Fixers’, has raised questions regarding the organizational machinery behind the outreach, suggesting that hosting groups like the AHEAD Forum may be linked to RSS-affiliated networks such as the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS). New allegations have emerged regarding the mobilization of Indian academic networks; Congress MP Jairam Ramesh claimed that directors of various Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) were mobilized to contact alumni to facilitate interactions with Bhagwat during his U.S. visit, calling such involvement “totally unacceptable.” The visit faces significant international scrutiny. Officials from the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) have called for sanctions against the RSS and urged the U.S. government to deny diplomatic courtesies to its leaders. USCIRF Chair Asif Mahmood and Commissioner Gene Mills argued that the U.S. should refrain from high-level meetings with RSS leaders, citing allegations that sub-groups have perpetrated attacks on religious minorities. In response to these calls, the Indian government has rejected the USCIRF’s criticisms. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the USCIRF as a “biased” organization that lacks credibility and has a history of making “disparaging and inflammatory remarks” about India.
