Mohan Bhagwat's planned Madison Square Garden appearance faces calls for visa revocation

Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is scheduled to address an estimated 5,000 people at Madison Square Garden in New York on August 29. The event is part of the organization's centenary 'Universal Oneness Celebrations'.

Opposition to the visit has intensified, with over 1,000 Americans petitioning Secretary of State Marco Rubio to deny or revoke Bhagwat’s U.S. visa. A coalition of civil rights, human rights, and religious freedom organizations is also demanding that the U.S. Department of State and Department of Homeland Security take action against his presence.

Critics and human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, have raised concerns regarding the RSS's history of involvement in sectarian violence and its ideological stance toward religious minorities in India. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) previously recommended targeted sanctions against the RSS, including asset freezes and visa restrictions, due to its role in religious intolerance.
