Mojo AI programming language becomes fully open source
Modular has announced the full open-sourcing of the Mojo programming language, including its compiler, development tools, and the components required to build the language from source. The code has been uploaded to Modular’s GitHub repository under the Apache 2.0 license with LLVM exceptions, allowing for broad use in commercial projects.
Mojo is designed to combine the simplicity of Python with the performance of C/CUDA and the safety of Rust. It aims to provide a unified heterogeneous development platform that works across various hardware, including CPUs, GPUs, Google TPUs, and AWS Trainium. This approach is intended to reduce dependency on specific vendor ecosystems, such as NVIDIA’s CUDA.
Following Qualcomm’s acquisition of Modular in June 2026, the Mojo development team has emphasized that the language will remain fully open-source and vendor-neutral. Additionally, through collaboration with Microsoft, support for Windows is being developed to expand the language's reach beyond its current Mac and Linux support. Modular also introduced Modular Cloud, a platform providing execution environments for NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, with plans to add support for more hardware in the coming months.
