Mojo programming language open-source transition
Overview
Following the version 1.0 release of the Mojo programming language, Modular transitioned the Mojo compiler and its associated toolchain to an open-source model under the Apache 2.0 license with LLVM exceptions. Initially, while the standard library had been accepting external contributions, the company noted that the compiler and tools were not yet ready for external contributions.
Subsequently, Modular announced the full open-sourcing of the language, which includes the compiler, development tools, and all components required to build the language from source. Following Qualcomm’s acquisition of Modular in June 2026, the development team reaffirmed that the language will remain vendor-neutral.
Expansion efforts include developing Windows support through collaboration with Microsoft and the introduction of Modular Cloud, a platform providing execution environments for NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. The language aims to provide a unified platform for various hardware, including CPUs, GPUs, Google TPUs, and AWS Trainium, to reduce reliance on specific vendor ecosystems.
