MOL Group inaugurates first biomethane plant in Szarvas

MOL Group has inaugurated its first biomethane production unit at its biogas plant in Szarvas, Hungary. The project represents an investment of 2.7 billion HUF and utilizes technology supplied by Italy’s Gruppo AB.

The facility purifies biogas from the existing plant—which has been operational since 2011—by removing carbon dioxide to produce high-purity biomethane. This gas can be injected directly into the national natural gas network. The unit is expected to produce more than 7 million cubic metres of biomethane annually, which is equivalent to meeting the yearly gas requirements of approximately 8,500 households.

This development is the third biomethane production facility of its kind in Hungary. Beyond replacing fossil natural gas, the biomethane produced could potentially be used for public and freight transport in the form of bioCNG or bioLNG, pending further research and development.
