MOL Group biomethane plant inauguration in Hungary
Overview
MOL Group has inaugurated its first biomethane production facility in Szarvas, Hungary, following an investment of more than 2.7 billion HUF. Utilizing technology supplied by the Italian company Gruppo AB, the unit purifies biogas from an existing plant that has been operational since 2011 by removing carbon dioxide.
The facility is designed to produce over 7 million cubic meters of high-purity biomethane annually, which is sufficient to meet the yearly gas requirements of approximately 8,500 households. This production is intended to replace an equivalent amount of fossil-based natural gas through injection into the national natural gas grid.
While the project is part of the MOL Group’s ‘SHAPE TOMORROW’ strategy to expand its green energy portfolio, further research and development are required to determine if the biomethane can be used for sustainable mobility in the form of BioCNG or BioLNG.
