Romania and Moldova implement winter energy and social aid programs

In Romania, vulnerable citizens and pensioners are set to receive various forms of financial assistance for the 2026-2027 cold season. Heating aid is available for those meeting specific income thresholds, with monthly support varying by energy source: up to 500 lei for electricity, 320 lei for solid fuels, and 250 lei for natural gas. Eligibility is restricted by assets, such as owning additional properties or vehicles newer than 10 years. Additionally, pensioners with monthly incomes up to 3,000 lei will receive a second installment of financial aid in December, ranging from 300 to 500 lei depending on their specific income bracket.

In Moldova, the EcoVoucher program has supported over 3,300 families in upgrading to energy-efficient appliances, with vouchers covering up to 70% of the cost for refrigerators and washing machines. Meanwhile, climate patterns like El Niño may impact energy markets by potentially bringing milder temperatures to Europe and Moldova, which could reduce natural gas consumption for heating.

However, economic pressures remain high. In Romania, rising electricity prices and gas costs are causing concern among low-income households and pensioners as they prepare for winter expenses.
