Brașov floods prompt emergency response as Romania faces widespread storm alerts
Heavy thunderstorms on the night of 2‑3 July brought torrential rain, strong winds and hail to large parts of Romania. In Brașov, streets in the Bartolomeu Nord, Şchei and other districts were inundated, trees fell and an ambulance was trapped. Municipal crews, the Volunteer Service for Emergency Situations and the fire department worked through the night to pump out water, clear debris and repair damaged roadways, while the mayor monitored the response every two hours.
Similar flooding and wind damage were reported in Hunedoara, where 277 electricity customers lost power after trees fell on power lines, and in Suceava, Botoșani, Constanța, Maramureș, Sibiu and other counties. Firefighters intervened in 45 localities across 18 counties and Bucharest, evacuating water from homes, basements and yards and removing dozens of fallen trees.
The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued yellow and orange alerts for most of the country, warning of rain totals of 15‑60 L/m², wind gusts up to 90 km/h and occasional hail. The alerts covering Transylvania, Moldova, Oltenia, Muntenia and Dobrogea remained in force through the weekend, prompting continued preparedness measures.
