Moldova and Romania tighten ambrosia control as health risks rise

Ambrosia, an invasive plant capable of producing up to 8 billion pollen grains per plant, is spreading rapidly in Moldova and Romania, triggering severe respiratory allergies. Health specialists warn that early intervention is essential to limit pollen exposure.

In Moldova, authorities have urged landowners to eradicate ambrosia before it flowers, highlighting the plant's longevity of up to 40 years and its massive seed production. In Romania, the city of Timișoara set a June 30 deadline for removal; from July 1 officials may inspect sites and fine non‑compliant owners between 1,000‑5,000 lei (individuals) and 10,000‑20,000 lei (legal entities). Notifications have been sent to over 100 property owners and institutions.

Experts recommend manual pulling, repeated mowing, approved herbicides, or machinery depending on land use. Controlling the plant is presented as both a legal obligation and a public‑health measure to reduce seasonal allergy cases and severe asthma attacks.
