Romanian medical schools record historic surge in 2026 admissions

The 2026 admission cycle for Romanian medical universities has attracted a record number of applicants. The University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Carol Davila” in Bucharest reported 6,916 candidates competing for 1,947 places (1,291 state‑funded and 656 fee‑based). The most contested programmes were Medicine (2,727 candidates for 985 places) and Dentistry (800 candidates for 274 places). A new dossier‑based admission was introduced for the Midwifery and Medical Assistance faculty, drawing 3,282 applicants for 574 spots.

Across the six public medical schools, more than 6,900 candidates sat the written exam on 26 July. Other universities reported similar demand: the Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj registered 2,064 candidates for 1,204 places, while the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy in Iași, Timișoara and other cities also saw high competition.

Eighteen national and international Olympiad winners were admitted without taking the written test, as per the Ministry of Education’s provision. The massive applicant pool underscores the growing popularity of medical careers in Romania.
