Moldova prepares energy subsidies and firewood stocks for winter
Moldovan authorities are preparing for the upcoming heating season by addressing energy costs and fuel supplies. The Ministry of Environment has assured that firewood stocks are sufficient, with over 120,000 additional cubic meters expected to be prepared following new harvesting rounds. To improve transparency, a reform is being planned to sell firewood through dedicated warehouses rather than directly from forests.
Regarding financial aid, Minister of Labor and Social Protection Natalia Plugaru announced that energy compensation programs will target at least 620,000 households, maintaining levels from the previous year despite rising gas prices. The government is considering stricter eligibility criteria to ensure aid reaches the most vulnerable, such as reducing the income threshold for dividend and interest earnings. The minimum compensation is expected to remain at 500 lei.
Additionally, a new salary reform for public sector employees is slated for January 2027. This reform aims to cap performance bonuses at 4% of the total salary fund, shifting the focus toward merit-based rewards and ensuring that base salaries constitute at least 70% of total monthly income.
