Moldova has entered a 60-day state of emergency in the energy and hydrological sectors, effective September 26. The measure, approved by Parliament, is a preventative step to manage potential shortages in electricity, natural gas, fuel, and drinking water ahead of the winter season.

In the energy sector, authorities will limit electricity exports during peak hours (18:00 to 22:00) to prioritize domestic consumption. Critical infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and emergency services, will receive priority supply. Public and commercial buildings are encouraged to reduce energy use, with decorative and advertising lighting to be disconnected.

Regarding fuel, the government has implemented restrictions on diesel purchases in containers, limiting them to 40 liters for general consumers and 100 liters for specialized agricultural equipment. Additionally, fuel exports from the Giurgiulești Free International Port are restricted unless stocks exceed 2,500 tons of gasoline and 7,500 tons of diesel.

In the hydrological sector, the state of emergency addresses severe water shortages caused by low levels in the Nistru and Prut rivers. Water extraction from these rivers for irrigation has been suspended. Non-essential water use, such as watering lawns or filling pools, is prohibited to protect the supply for the population and essential services.
