Moldova declares 60-day energy and hydrological state of emergency
Moldova is entering a 60-day state of emergency in the energy and hydrological sectors starting September 26. The National Crisis Management Commission (CNMC) has approved several measures to ensure the continuity of electricity, natural gas, and fuel supplies.
To manage electricity demand, authorities are recommending reduced consumption during peak hours (06:00-09:00 and 18:00-22:00). Public and commercial buildings must reduce interior lighting by at least 30%, and decorative or advertising lighting will be disconnected. High-energy enterprises are required to schedule intensive activities outside of peak hours. Priority for electricity supply will be given to medical institutions, emergency services, and critical infrastructure.
Regarding fuel security, petroleum product transports will receive priority on railways and dedicated lanes at border crossings. Export and re-export of gasoline and diesel from the Giurgiulești Free International Port will be restricted to quantities exceeding stocks of 2,500 tons of gasoline and 7,500 tons of diesel, with specific exceptions for deliveries to Ukraine. Additionally, ANRE will implement a temporary adjusted formula for calculating the maximum retail price of standard diesel. Consumers may purchase diesel in containers up to 40 liters, though the limit is increased to 100 liters for specialized agricultural containers.
