Moldova hospital modernization and energy price warnings
A 72.4 million euro investment program is underway to modernize 10 national hospitals in Moldova, supported by the European Union, EIB Global, EBRD, and the Moldovan government. The project, known as the Moldova Energy Efficiency Project (MEEP), aims to reduce energy consumption in these facilities by approximately 40%. The first phase of renovations has commenced at the Clinical Psychiatric Hospital in Chișinău and the Diomid Gherman Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery, with contract values for these two institutions totaling approximately 12 million euro.
Separately, Moldova faces potential increases in energy costs. The national regulatory agency, ANRE, estimates that electricity prices could rise by up to 15% due to higher natural gas costs for thermal power plants and increased regional prices caused by hydrological droughts affecting hydroelectric and nuclear production. Additionally, the central supplier Energocom has requested a regulated electricity price of 3.51 lei/kWh for 2026, which would represent a 31% increase from the current 2.68 lei/kWh. Economist Veaceslav Ioniță warned that these energy pressures could drive national inflation toward 9%.
