Moldova exhibition on Soviet-era terror attracts over 20,000 visitors

An exhibition titled “Terror of the State in Soviet Moldova” was held in Chișinău and Bălţi from 12 June to 6 July 2026. Organized by the Ministry of Culture and the National Archives Agency, it commemorated the 85th anniversary of the first Stalinist deportations from the region.

The show drew roughly 20 500 visitors – about 17 500 in the capital and nearly 3 000 in Bălţi – and displayed archival documents, photographs, period objects and testimonies of families deported during the 1937‑38, 1941 and 1949 waves of repression. Highlights included a focus on the 1946‑47 famine and cultural events such as the film “Corbii prada n‑o împart” and the theater production “1946”.

The exhibition was supported by the Association of Former Deportees and Political Prisoners, the State Railway Company, the Chancellery and regional museums.
