Eastern European deportations & Holocaust remembrance

Overview

June 2026 launched a regional wave of remembrance focused on Soviet‑era deportations and the Holocaust. Romania marked the 85th anniversary of the Iași pogrom with a state visit by Israeli President Isaac Herzog, while Moldova commemorated the 75th anniversary of the 1949 Bessarabian deportations, held a “Miting‑Requiem” for communist‑era victims, and published online the 1941 deportation lists from the former RSS Moldovenească. Moldova’s “Train of Pain” exhibition in Chișinău and Bălţi displayed historic railway cars, and the “Terror of the State in Soviet Moldova” exhibition attracted roughly 20 500 visitors, underscoring a “culture of memory” and prompting a proposal to criminalise denial of Stalinist atrocities. Lithuania organised a series of events from early June through mid‑June, including concerts, name‑reading actions, a nationwide minute of silence on 14 June, and the “Day of Sorrow and Hope” ceremonies that honoured political prisoners and deportees. Similar commemorations occurred in Latvia, where President Edgars Rinkēvičs attended ceremonies for the 85th anniversary of the 1941 deportations, and in Belarus and Poland, where joint events marked the WWII invasion and Soviet deportation anniversaries. Romania also remembered the 1951 Bărăgan deportations through a documentary premiere at Cotroceni Palace and an art exhibition in Reșița. In August, Moldova expanded its Holocaust remembrance by unveiling multilingual plaques at the Visterniceni railway station in Chișinău and at two sites in Bălţi, including a bronze plaque before the police inspectorate and an informational panel beside the existing Holocaust monument. The Chișinău plaque, presented in five languages, commemorates the deportation of thousands of Romani in September 1942, of whom roughly 11,000 perished; officials noted prior vandalism of the site, while the Bălţi mayor declined comment.
