Moldova explores new energy sources amid falling gas trading volumes
The Moldovan government is conducting exploratory discussions with energy entrepreneur Igor Makarov to identify new natural gas sources and supply routes. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan confirmed meetings with Makarov, noting that the government is seeking alternative routes to secure energy stability. Tofan emphasized that any future cooperation must be characterized by transparency and public confidence to earn citizen trust.
Simultaneously, data from the Energy Community indicates a significant shift in Moldova’s natural gas market. During the first half of 2026, trading volumes on the BRM EST platform fell by 72% compared to the previous reference period. While total volume decreased, the number of transactions rose from 87 to 245, suggesting a fragmentation of trading activity into smaller, more frequent deals.
Market reports also highlight a price disparity, with gas traded on the BRM EST platform averaging approximately €5/MWh more expensive than quotations on the Greek EnExGroup platform. Additionally, there has been a sharp contraction in the forward-contract segment, with volumes dropping from 549.4 GWh to 10.6 GWh.
