Moldova faces significant population decline through 2050
Moldova is projected to experience a major demographic crisis, ranking eighth globally for potential population loss by 2050. According to estimates from CEOWORLD Magazine, the country's population is expected to decrease by 16.7% compared to 2020 levels.
The decline is driven by low birth rates, emigration, and an aging population. This trend poses significant risks to the national economy, the availability of the workforce, and the sustainability of public systems, including pensions and social services.
In global rankings, Moldova's projected decline is more severe than that of Romania, which is expected to see a 15.5% decrease. Other nations facing high rates of depopulation include Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Latvia, while developed economies such as Japan and South Korea also face significant demographic contractions.
