Moldova and Romania exchange rates and economic trends

Overview

By early September 2026, economic and fiscal pressures intensified in both Romania and Moldova. In Romania, economists warned of a potential collapse of the pension system due to demographic shifts. Economist Ionuț Dumitru noted that the ratio of contributors to beneficiaries is approaching 1:1, predicting a “major financial shock around 2030” as the post-1966 demographic cohort reaches retirement age. To mitigate this, the Fiscal Council has proposed increasing the retirement age and eliminating early retirement privileges for certain professions. Additionally, new legislation regarding Pillar II private pensions mandates that assets be transferred to heirs' own private pension accounts rather than being paid out as cash if the heir is a system participant.

In Moldova, political scrutiny has turned toward rising state debt. Deputy Alexandr Berlinschii called for an investigation into the doubling of state debt from 69 billion to 132 billion lei during the PAS administration, requesting that the European Public Prosecutor's Office examine the use of EU funds. Former Prime Minister Ion Sturza also emphasized the need for radical economic changes to manage rising budget deficits and debt servicing costs. Amidst these fiscal concerns, Deputy Prime Minister Valeriu Chiveri reported that the state allocated over 218 million lei in the first half of 2026 to provide medical, social, and educational services to residents in the Transnistrian region.
