Moldova focuses on energy market liberalization and infrastructure

At the fifth Energy Transition Agenda conference in Chișinău, Moldova’s State Secretary for Energy, Carolina Novac, emphasized the importance of liberalizing electricity and natural gas markets. The discussions highlighted the role of Energocom in transitioning toward a competitive environment and the necessity of developing interconnections with Romania and the European Union to diversify supply sources and reduce dependence on single external providers.

Key infrastructure projects, such as the Suceava–Bălți and Gutinaș–Strășeni electrical interconnections, are identified as vital for increasing capacity. While Moldova has successfully integrated gas imports from Romania and the EU since 2021 and electricity since 2022, limited interconnection capacities remain a challenge during periods of high consumption.

Simultaneously, the state-owned company Energocom has requested the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) to approve a regulated electricity price of 3.51 lei/kWh. This represents a 74.6% increase from the price approved in March 2026. The company cites rising acquisition costs from renewable sources and the need to recover financial deviations exceeding 236 million lei.
